Date: March 10-12, 2011
Location: Vail Mountain, Colorado
Description: Official kickoff of the Ray Festa Melanoma Foundation's National Ski SunSmart™ Program on the ski slopes and in the villages of Vail, Colorado. As part of the program launch, RFMF distributed free sunscreen samples and educational information about living SunSmart as you actively enjoy outdoor winter activities like skiing, snow boarding and snow shoeing. In coordination with CarniVail and under the direction of RFMF national board members, local volunteers committed to being SunSmart, manned booths at the base of the mountain, as well as at rest stops along the mountain.
Recap: Over 35,000 tubes of sunscreen were distributed over two days. The RFMF volunteers were greeted enthusiastically by locals as well as visitors enjoying their time at and on the mountain. A survey was conducted on ski cancer and melanoma awareness. In particular, individuals were questioned about their knowledge of the reflectivity of the sun off of the snow and the greater exposure to UV raus as the altitude increases on the mountain. The volunteers were engaged by melanoma survivors as well as family and friends of individuals who were affected by the disease. This group in particular was appreciative and were crusaders for our mission. The event was a resounding success with local print, radio and television coverage. It is anticipated that a Denver and a Vail RFMF Chapter will be formed to sustain our efforts in Colorado.
